UTC 122 Rusty Cutlass

Rusty Cutlass

With their genesis at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando, FL, Rusty Cutlass has turned into one of the premiere pirate bands on the Southeast pirate fest scene.

First we talk with Mark Miller aka Nasty Nate about his career with Disney, how Rusty Cutlass got started, pirate jokes, and concertinas.

Then we’ll pop over to one of the resorts and catch Ken Thiboult (Pepe Duval) and Dean Rasik (Dirty John Dirk) between sets.  They tell us how they got involved with Disney, how the group chooses material, and about Ken’s practical jokes.

UTC 106 Artist Michael Noles

Pirate Artist Michael Noles

Michael Noles spent decades as a Senior Creative Director for the Walt Disney Company.  And now he creates fantastic pieces of pirate art that capture the unseen moments of shipboard life.

We dig into plenty of good Disney stuff here for fans of that stuff (like me..)  And we talk about where Michael’s very dense style comes from and how he’s made art his life since attending Ringling.

Wanna hear something from the new Ye Banished Privateers album First Night Back In Port?  I got ya covered with the song “Cooper’s Rum”.

UPDATE: Michael and Roxanne were hit pretty hard in Hurricane Irma.  A huge oak tree slammed into their house and did a great deal of destruction to their house and Michael’s studio.  They’re currently camped out in a hotel and could use some help.  If you’ve got a few bucks to send their way, they’ve got a Go Fund Me page here.

UTC 092 Geoff Zanelli Composer of Pirates of the Caribbean 5

Geoff Zanelli, Composer of Pirates of the Caribbean 5
I’m super excited to bring you Geoff Zanelli today!  Geoff wrote the musical score for Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales.  He’s also credited with “additional music” on the first four POTC films.  We talk about what that means (and it means way more than it sounds like).

Plus we’ll dig into how he went about capturing some of the POTC1 feel while still bringing his own voice to this new score.  And how he got in with Hans Zimmer after his years growing up in Orange County and going to the Berklee School of Music.

This is such a fun talk and Geoff’s enthusiasm for the Pirates of the Caribbean films is infectious!

If you’re new to the show, here are a few other episodes you might like to check out as a starting point.

For More Pirates of the Caribbean
Ep 25 – Jim Byrkit – Storyboard artist and location scout for early POTC films
Ep 31 – Jason Surrell – Former Disney Imagineer and expert on all things POTC from the rides to the films
Ep 74 – Lee Arenberg – Pintel from first 3 POTC films
Other Cool Episodes
Ep 7 – Don Maitz – Painter and creator of Captain Morgan Rum character
Ep 27/28 – John Chatterton – wreck diver and one of the few people to ever find a sunken pirate ship
Ep 55 – Ye Banished Privateers – One of Europe’s best pirate bands!

Stuff We Talked About In The Show:

You can hear Hans Zimmer’s original demo recordings for Pirates of the Caribbean at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6wsGESeNjk

Here’s a bit more in depth discussion with Hans Zimmer about POTC’s music: http://www.soundtrack.net/content/article/?id=205

And if you really want to go down the rabbit hole, check out the comments section of this page on Zimmer and POTC too: http://www.hans-zimmer.com/index.php?rub=disco&id=1128

Rodrigo y Gabriela collaborated with Geoff and Hans on POTC 4.  Check out some of their work:

Music from Pirates of the Caribbean 4

And some other stuff that I think shows them off even better

In the fun fact about the number 92, I mentioned the world record length name for a place, the hill in New Zealand.  Here’s the full name:

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu

Bet ya can’t say that 10 times fast!
