UTC 124 Eric Nelson and Kirby Heyborne of Pirates of the Great Salt Lake

Eric Nelson and Kirby Heyborne of Pirates of the Great Salt Lake

Eric Nelson is the writer/director of the 2006 film Pirates of the Great Salt Lake.  And he brought along Kirby Heyborne aka “Captain Kirk” to tell us the story of how their quirky little pirate film got made back when the whole Pirates of the Caribbean thing was heating up.

It’s a great story about bootstrapping a film and the highs and lows of its release.  We’ll also find out how the film ended up and what the guys are doing now.

Pick up a copy of Pirates of the Great Salt Lake for yourself at Amazon and help support the show. 🙂

UTC 114 Screenwriter James V Hart

James V Hart

So excited to talk with James V Hart this week!  James is the screenwriter of one of my all-time favorite movies, “Hook”!  He also wrote “Muppet Treasure Island” along with other great films like “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”, “Contact”, and “August Rush”.  And he was the creator of the show “Crossbones” for NBC a couple years back.

We go deep on “Hook” in this talk and get the real background of how the film came to be made.  There’s a lot of incorrect information on the net and we set straight here.  We dig into the difficulty of casting Kermit the Frog in an appropriate role in “Muppet Treasure Island”.  And we talk about how NBC destroyed “Crossbones” and turned into a totally different show than James sold them.

If you’d like to hear the episodes of “Being Blackbeard”, the Crossbones podcast I did while the show was airing, there’s a link to the zip file in the show notes for Ep 9 plus a fun interview with cast member Ezra Buzzington.

And here’s a link to the episode of Defend Your Movie about “Hook” that I mentioned during the show.

Heads up!  I’m coming to Orlando, FL Nov 3-4, 2017 to do two comedy shows!  Click here to get $10 tickets.

UTC 105 Finding Neverland Screewriter David Magee

David Magee Screenwriter of Finding Neverland

David Magee is the screenwriter of the fantastic movies Finding Neverland and Life of Pi.  He’s also working on the new Mary Poppins and Narnia films.

I’m a nut for anything Peter Pan/Captain Hook related, so this talk with David is really fun.  We get into J.M. Barrie’s life during the creation of Peter Pan and how David did his research.  We talk plenty of Captain Hook and how he fits into the story of both Peter Pan and Barrie’s life.

And we had to talk some Life of Pi too!  It was a notoriously difficult book to adapt until David and Ang Lee got their hands on it. We’ll dip our toes into Mary Poppins and Narnia too.
