On today’s show, an interview with Ross Furman, one of the founders of the Eastport Pirate Festival in Eastport, Maine. It takes place the second weekend of September each year.

Ross is quite a character and we get into their motivations behind the festival and what you can do there, including bed races, a tattoo contest, and lots of piratey goodness. Ross even lets us in on what his favorite tattoo of the contests has been. And it’s… let’s say, simple.

Also on the show today, comedy about growing up with biker parents from Dobie Maxwell and a song called “Death and Treasure” from Naufragant’s concept album about Treasure Island called “Cursed Island”.

Note: Naufragant is a new name for the band. Apparently they had some legal issues with their previous name, Skull and Bones. The album linked below is theirs under the previous name. I’ll get the whole story as soon as I can schedule them for an interview.

Today’s show sponsored by SR Staley’s Panther Bay Series.

John Amrhein and his team of researchers have discovered details behind the actual events that inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write Treasure Island. The background of this story has been hotly debated for decades. And he’s put it all in a book called “Treasure Island: The Untold Story.” There’s also a 2nd book called “The Hidden Galleon.” You’ll find links to both books below.

This could be a somewhat controversial episode, but John presents some really great points. And these true events are a great story in themselves.

In this interview, John goes into great detail about these true events that inspired Treasure Island and I get to mostly shut up and listen. 🙂

Also on the show today, comedy about calling in sick to work from Carlos Rodriguez and the song “May Our Love Live On” from Nashville band Moon and Forty Two.

Sydney Treasure Hunt is an experience designed by Gillian Opie that uses pirates for team building. The whole thing sounds super fun. And she’s managed to build a great pirate ship business of her own.

This is a great example of the diversity in the pirate community. And since everyone loves a pirate, it’s a great way of getting normal people involved too. We also talk about how the pirate with the microphone can say anything they want without repercussions.

As you’ll hear in the interview, Jillian did like many pirates and jumped off into the unknown hoping it would all work out. Unlike most classical pirates, it actually did. 🙂

Also on the show today, comedy about weddings from Michael Somerville. I worked with Michael recently at Zanies in Rosemont, IL. Very funny dude and you may have caught one of his 4 appearances on Letterman. And a song called “Follow Your Heart” from Katie Garibaldi. Katie’s an award-winning singer-songwriter and a dear front of mine.
