UTC 031 – Imagineer and Pirates of the Caribbean Author Jason Surrell

Jason Surrell - Pirate of the Caribbean Author and ImagineerJason Surrell is a theme park show designer – former Imagineer, now with Universal – and the author of “Pirates of the Caribbean: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies”.

He was deeply involved with adding the new film characters to the classic Pirates of the Caribbean theme park rides and we talk about how they did that to avoid alienating the hardcore classic fans.

We also get into what working with Johnny Depp on the set is really like, what X Atencio told him that made him nearly drive off the road, and how he got into trouble with Marty Sklar after writing the book.  Tons of fun stories in here.

UTC 030 – Capt. Jack Gozno of Scoundrel’s Inn Talks Pirate Music

Jack Gonzo of Scoundrel's Inn Pirate MusicI like pirate music, but I don’t know nearly as much about it as Jack Gonzo does.  He does a great pirate music radio show every Wednesday at 9pm Central called Scoundrel’s Inn.

During our talk, we dive a little into how Jack go started in this space.  And we talk a lot about how varied pirate music can really be.  He also suggests a great starter pack of bands if you’re unfamiliar with the genre.

And you’ll find out the one-genre of music that hasn’t been touched by pirates yet.  (Which I may take care of soon…)

These are the “starter kit” bands that Jack suggests during the interview.  You can’t go wrong with any of these:

Pirate Charles
Musical Blades
Pride of Bedlam
The Jolly Rogers
Dread Crew of Oddwood
Bilgerats and Pirates

Plus comedy from Shawn Halpin about his favorite radio stations and a song called “Share My Pixie Dust” by Phil Johnson and Roadside Attraction.

Yeah, I don’t usually play my own stuff like that, but I wasn’t able to spend as much time as usual harassing bands for a track this week. 🙂

Speaking of which… Are you a band or comedian?  Pirate or not… If you’d like me to play your stuff on the show, just send me an email at Phil@UnderTheCrossbones.com and let’s make it happen.

UTC 029 – Pirate Surgery Expert Mark “Mission” Kehoe

Pirate Surgery Expert Mark "Mission" KehoeThis week we get super niche and talk about surgery and medical practices among the Golden Age pirates with Mark “Mission” Kehoe.  He’s a pirate surgery expert and reenactor with some great stories.

As Mark talks about, we mostly hear about amputations and trepanning.  But there’s a lot more to the medical practices of pirates and pirate surgery than you might think.  You’ll be amazed at what the #1 killer actually was.  Plus he’ll blow quite a few myths out of the water.

I learned a lot during this interview and I’ll be you will too.
