John Davidson of Finding Neverland The Musical John Davidson plays Captain Hook in the touring company of Finding Neverland The Musical. But that’s only the latest project. He’s survived the jungle of the entertainment business for over 50 years by being able to do lots of different things well and always considering new avenues to pursue.

You may remember him as the host of That’s Incredible! on Sunday nights in the early 80’s. Or maybe one of his many guest host stints on The Tonight Show during the Johnny Carson years. Or maybe as a host of Hollywood Squares.

Beyond his TV work, he’s done loads of work in theater both on and off Broadway. He’s also an accomplished musician with a ton of released recordings.

Greg Engel of Arrr Ink

Greg Engel aka Oddly O’Differous is the captain (because he’s got the red coat) of Arrr Ink, a pirate comedy troupe that you can see at a variety of pirate fests in the Southeast US.

Like many of the groups we’ve talked to, Arrr Ink is a family affair with Greg’s wife, sister, and brother in law getting in on the action.

We both do comedy, but in drastically different worlds. So we dig into all sorts of good comedy talk about atmosphere, venue, level of appropriateness, etc. You’ll hear that he’s waaaaay better with kids than I am. 🙂 I’m constantly amazed at the amount of work pirate performers put in. And Arrr Ink is no exception.

Here’s some of the amateur video of Johnny Depp playing with riders on Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland that I talked about. More schtick and less girls (s)creaming. I think it’s interesting that even with these new fangled phone camers, the color of the ride still looks like the old 1960’s films of it. The official Disney vid definitely had a lot of color correction done.

Here’s the official Disney one for comparison. Looks better but, ya know…

Whoever came up with this idea should get a bonus though. Huge amount of free promotion for the new movie.

Neil Massey Bladesmith at Rogue Steel

Neil Massey is the owner of Rogue Steel where he is a bladesmith, creating custom swords and other pointy things for stage and screen use. We’ll dig into his process (since I know nothing about making swords) and he’ll tell us how he got into fight choreography and bladesmithing.

We have some good laughs along the way and talk about the custom weapon requests he’s gotten. And yes, he does get dirty. Not that way. Get your mind out of the gutter.
