UTC 168 Charles Dean Beeker – Underwater Archaeologist and Shipwreck Conservationist

Charles Dean Beeker Underwater Archaeologist and Shipwreck Conservationist
Charles Dean Beeker’s official title is the Director of the Center of Underwater Science at the University of Indiana – Bloomington.  But that word salad doesn’t even begin to tell you about his real passion.

Unlike other underwater archaeologist s we’ve talked to, Charle’s wants to leave the stuff down there and make these shipwreck sites into visitable national historic places.  We talk about the whys of his plans and how they play out.

Among his many projects are Captain William Kidd’s Quedagh Merchant and the Frolic, a Gold Rush-era cargo ship off the coast of California.

Great stories and a very different take than we’ve heard from others in this one.

UTC 104 Underwater Archaeologist Dr E. Lee Spence

Dr E. Lee Spence

Dr E. Lee Spence is an underwater archaeologist and one of the first people to get a university degree for that work.  He’s found hundreds of shipwrecks since finding his first in 1959 at age 12 with homegrown dive gear.

His most famous discoveries are the Hunley and the Georgiana. We discuss both.  Of course plenty of piratey goodness too.

And it wouldn’t be a diver episode without some near death experience type stories.  Lee has a couple doozies to tell us here.

Don’t forget to check out the bonus content in the player below. We go way off the beaten path and talk about who the real Rhett Butler is from Gone With The Wind.  It’s an interesting story and only about 9 minutes long.
