UTC 205 Melinda Long

Melinda Long

Melinda Long had written books before but when she discovered that at the time there were very few children’s books about pirates, she decided to write one.  About the same time her book was to come out, Disney released Pirates of the Caribbean.  Talk about being in the right place at the right time.

In this episode:

How Melinda got her book published

The process of writing a children’s book

How her work took on a life of it’s own via a sequel and a play

Thank you so much for tuning in (or back into) the show, this is my first episode as host of this wonderful ship that Phil Johnson built.  While he has provided so much support and training to have me take over the show, this first effort has all the marks of “what is this guy thinking?!?”  But we have to start somewhere.  The interview is lovely, Melinda couldn’t have been a better first guest for me, I hope you tune in to listen to this and all upcoming episodes as I get better at this.

UTC 201 Guy Chet, author of The Ocean is a Wilderness

Guy Chet author of The Ocean is a Wilderness

Guy Chet is the author of he Ocean is a Wilderness: Atlantic Piracy and the Limits of State Authority, 1688-1856.  It’s a really interesting scholarly work that digs down into the idea of how long piracy in the Atlantic actually lasted and what finally brought it to a half.
We’re going deep into post-Golden Age piracy, economics, and history on this one.

In this episode:

  • How long Atlantic piracy actually lasted and why
  • What actually brought Atlantic piracy to an end
  • Where they went after
  • Some interesting ways to look at and interpret history
