UTC 205 Melinda Long

Melinda Long

Melinda Long had written books before but when she discovered that at the time there were very few children’s books about pirates, she decided to write one.  About the same time her book was to come out, Disney released Pirates of the Caribbean.  Talk about being in the right place at the right time.

In this episode:

How Melinda got her book published

The process of writing a children’s book

How her work took on a life of it’s own via a sequel and a play

Thank you so much for tuning in (or back into) the show, this is my first episode as host of this wonderful ship that Phil Johnson built.  While he has provided so much support and training to have me take over the show, this first effort has all the marks of “what is this guy thinking?!?”  But we have to start somewhere.  The interview is lovely, Melinda couldn’t have been a better first guest for me, I hope you tune in to listen to this and all upcoming episodes as I get better at this.

UTC 192 Rebekah Harris of Silverella

Rebekah Harris of Silverella

Rebekah Harris is the owner of Silverella, a nautical themed jewelry company based in Montauk.  I’m not even much of a jewelry guy and I want to get my hands on her works of art.  Really unique stuff.  And she’s got great stories about her haphazard hometown and the wilds of the New York diamond district.

In this episode:

  • What really sells a piece of jewelry more so than the actual gems and materials in it.
  • How she fell into the jewelry business
  • Stories of the New York diamond district
  • How a child kidnapped by pirates became George Washington’s right hand man
  • The super ironic name of her hometown
  • Why she moved her studio from NYC to Montauk
