My guest on the show today is Captain Teach, head of the Phoenix Risen pirate clan. I had no idea what pirate clans are all about, why they exist, and what they do. So this was educational for me and I hope for you too.

Teach gives us the lowdown on how he got into Phoenix Risen and how you can join the pirate clan you’re looking at. And we’ll talk about how and why pirates have infiltrated the Ren Faire circuit. Plus we’ll dig into all the great projects he’s heading up for the Sherwood Forest Faire, including summer camps for adults and kids.

Mark Hanna author of Pirate Nests and the Rise of the British Empire

Mark Hanna is a professor at UC San Diego and the author of “Pirate Nests and the Rise of the British Empire 1570-1740”. Yep, we’re getting historical today.

We’ll talk about how pirates needed allies on land to allow them to plunder as they did and how the big commercial companies tried to keep it from happening. And how all that pirate booty actually helped the British Empire. Plus Puritans illegally minting coins? Militant Protestantism?

And of course, we address the most important question… the elephant in the room… I ask him how he manages to get anything productive done in a beautiful beach city like San Diego. 🙂

UTC 040 Pirate Curator Nick Hoffman Before we get to Nick Hoffman, A big ahoy to all the new listeners! And a big thanks to Craig Buddy and the mention on his podcast that brought so many great new folks into the UTC circle over the last few days.

On today’s show we talk with Nick Hoffman, who is a buddy of mine from the comedy world. Until recently we didn’t know we were both pirate fans. Nick’s been deep in it for quite awhile having thrown a big pirate wedding and curated a pirate installation at the Petaluma History Museum. And we’ll dig deep into both of those.
