Mike Hawthorne is a fantastic visual artist who came to writing later in life with his book The Hungry Horizon. It’s historical fiction about the pirate Bartholomew Sharpe who sailed with Henry Morgan before going his own way.

Born in Manchester in 1954, well traveled and self taught, Mike Hawthorne has made his reputation in London since 1975 with exhibitions of rock, reggae, and jazz visuals, underground comix and work acquired by the Museum of London and Lembeth Archives.

The first nine years of his life were spent in Nigeria and Sierra Leone. His early influences were MAD magazines, illustrations of the American Civil War and television newsreels of Biafra and Vietnam. His paintings also draw on European medieval traditions of depicting heaven and hell. Since 1975 Hawthorne has worked in London, creating rock, reggae and jazz visuals and underground ‘comix’.

In this episode:

Who was Bartholomew Sharpe?
Growing up in Nigeria and Sierra Leone
The status of book 2 and some insight into the publishing industry
Mike’s artistic influences and German Expressionism

Stephan Talty Empire of Blue Water

I discovered Stephan Talty through his book “The Black Hand” about the proto-Mafia crime organization that terrorized the Italian community of New York in the early 1900’s.

And I was super pleased to find out that he also wrote a book about Henry Morgan, “Empire of Blue Water”, as well as co-wrote “A Captain’s Duty” with Richard Phillips aka Captain Phillips. Yep, the guy from the movie. So we both ends of pirate history in this one.

In this episode:

Henry Morgan’s lasting legacy and character
The process of reliving his capture by Somali pirates with Richard Phillips
How Stephan manages to write so many books
The Black Hand as the precursor to the Mafia and Joe Petrosino as an Italian hero.
