UTC 093 Chris Bowes of Alestorm

Chris Bowes of Alestorm

Chris Bowes and his band Alestorm have been bouncing around the world playing their unique brand of pirate metal since 2007.  They’re fifth album, “No Grave But The Sea” was just released on May 26th.  You’ll hear a new track from the album on the show.

I love a band that doesn’t take themselves very seriously but still wants to write good music and put on a great show.  And Chris is a nut, so this is a really fun interview.

We’ll dig into the beginnings of the band and how Chris ended up as the sole remaining original member.  Plus how they think differently about themselves compared to their fans, how they manage to keep their pirate themes fresh, and of course… that keytar.

UTC 037 – Irish Pirate Rock Band O’Craven

Irish Pirate Rock Band O'CravenO’Craven is a great band with the extremely specific niche of Irish Pirate Rock, from San Jose, CA.  In this interview we dig into how they stumbled across the music they were meant to be playing.  We also talk a lot about how being way different from most bands has helped them stand out in a positive way.

Bonus! Since the band and I are in the same town, I finally got to do an in-person interview!  Thankfully I thought ahead enough to get video of the proceedings too. And since I had video of the interview, I figured I’d film my talky parts before and after the interview too, just for fun.

If you like the video stuff, let me know and I’ll do more of it.  Definitely hoping to do some at the NorCal Pirate Festival in June.  Our favorite Irish Pirate rockers will be there too!

Today’s show is sponsored by:

Anything Goes VermontUnique handmade goods for your favorite pirate.

Plus comedy from Irish comedian Dave Nihill (There’s a theme? Yes!) and of course, music from O’Craven.  You’ll hear a song called “Pint Glass” and I’ll explain in the show why I picked that one.

Totally did this while I was recording the theme song…

I got a question recently about the Under The Crossbones theme song: what it is and how you can get it.

It’s a piece I composed and recorded myself.  If you’ve been listening to the show for awhile you know I do that kind of thing. 🙂

The tune itself is really short, only about 20 seconds.  But if you’d like to have it you’re welcome to it.  Might make a cool ring tone or something.  Does anyone use ring tones anymore?
